DENVER – Rebound Technologies, Inc. is teaming up with Idaho National Laboratory (INL) to help develop a commercial refrigeration system that could save supermarkets up to 60 percent on their freezer operating costs.
Rebound Technologies and INL just signed a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) to begin the collaborative portion of a $137,000 Department of Energy Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant. The teams will be building a prototype of Rebound’s IcePoint™ system using materials called switchable polarity solvents (SPS), developed by INL.
“The INL team has been working with switchable polarity solvents for five years as a means to improve water purification,” said Dr. Aaron Wilson, the INL researcher working on the project. “We’re looking forward to seeing how SPS can help Rebound develop its technology.”
This is the first time Rebound Technologies has collaborated with INL, but the relationship could prove to be beneficial for the refrigeration industry.
“There hasn’t been much innovation in the refrigeration sector since compression-based cooling was invented in the mid-1800s,” said Rebound CEO Kevin Davis. “We’ve validated IcePoint™ as a technically feasible alternative to conventional refrigeration, but SPS may just be the material that helps us reach our performance objectives.”
“Increasing material performance has been the primary focus of our recent research,” he said. “We are really excited about the potential to leverage that work in this new architecture.”
IcePoint creates ice at night – during what utilities typically call “off-peak” hours – when demand for electricity is low and prices are less expensive. As the ice melts, it mixes with a SPS to create a minus-30 Celsius fluid that maintains freezer temperatures throughout the day.
The design eventually separates mixture into pure water and SPS, reusing both as the closed-loop cycle continues.
Rebound has a functioning demo in Denver using ethanol, but is searching for higher performing freeze suppressant options.
“There are multiple material options,” Davis said. “We proved technical feasibility using a salt, improved system performance with ethanol and look forward to exploring even higher performing options such as methanol, ammonia or SPS.”
According to Davis, testing indicates the IcePoint™ design uses 40 percent less energy than conventional systems while achieving additional cost savings by capitalizing on lower “off-peak” power rates.
